Nautilus research indicates this is generally done by 2 easy methods:

#1 - Through contaminated email (usually SPAM) using 'socially engineered' hooks. This includes any means possible to get a target (you) to click on a hotlink embeded within email sent to you, leading back to a contaminated system.

Sucker-bait material known to be used with great success includes 'Free Sports Tickets', 'Free Music', 'Free Movies', 'Free Gaming', 'Private Investigator Watching You w/Included Proof', and 'IRS Tax Refund Due'. Just click here...

#2 - By way of a contaminated or compromised website. Bank of India's website was recently hacked and infected with code designed to force 26 instances of malware and other hacks, designed to take advantage of unpatched Microsoft operating systems and the Internet Explorer web browser.

Other exploits spreading this toxic code have been found in compromised advertising servers, and websites using vunerable Microsoft and Apple server code.

What Can I Do??
If you suspect your machine has been hijacked, immediately disconnect it from the Internet so your problem won't spread and infect others... Because it easily can - and will, if given half a chance.
A - Any strange or unexpected system behavior it didn't use to do.
B - System locks up, or won't Start up/Shut down smoothly, without errors.
C - Popup advertising boxes appear onscreen, totally uninvited.
D - AntiVirus and/or Firewall shuts down, or suddenly fails to properly start up.
E - Inability to download AntiVirus definitions or Microsoft Windows updates.
F - Unexpected warnings that you 'May be Infected', or of 'Hacking Attempts'.
G - Unexpected software display requiring purchase of uninvited products.
H - Unusual 'Security Scan', telling you your machine is infected with a list of junk.
I - Unusually Slow or Sluggish PC response - Like it's busy doing something else.
J - Network connection light winking on/off like mad, yet machine should be idle.
K - 'Out of Drive Space' notice, when there is obviously plenty of storage available.
L - Mouse cursor bounces all over screen and you can't catch up with it.
Signs of infection include, but are not limited to:

Nautilus technicians inspect and repair infected PC's on a near-daily basis. After 26 years on the job, we've pretty much seen all forms of disaster come across our service bench. It costs in downtime and lost income.

Our techs first scan the suspect PC with our proprietary infection-sniffing software, then let the owner know exactly what was found BEFORE applying repairs or proceding further. Each hijack incident is different; some quickly repairable, others - hopelessly mangled beyond recognition. Questions? Phone: 620 365-7559
Ahhhhhh!!
Russian & Chinese paid-hackers are currently in the lead, deliberately causing the infection of millions of PC's.
